  • Christmas Potatoes in soil

As compost is so expensive, more than the actual potatoes are to buy in fact. I was thinking of growing my Wilja in containers filled with soil from the plot with potato fertilizer mixed in and kept undercover. Or the other option of planting out and covering the soil with a hooped plastic tunnel cloche. Has anyone done this ?

Growing them in pots of soil should be absolutely fine. It's being in containers that is the important part, so that you can bring them indoors when the weather turns cooler.

Make sure that you don't fill the containers so full of soil that you can't lift them and that the containers are strong enough to support the weight of the soil when carried.

I'm only doing them individually in 12 inch wide plastic pots.

12 inch pots are to small or this 18 in-24 in will work better.
put them on dustbin wheels will make them easy to move.

12 inch should work just fine as long as you only put one tuber in each pot and as long as you are prepared to water plenty.
