  • Put a pinch of each of the Lettuce I'm growing this year to chit today - that will be my second sowing, something I say I'll do every year after ending up with a good few that need eating at the same time before they bolt (often giving some away as we can't eat them all) but I never seen to get around to.

It'll be interesting to see if they're ready to harvest significantly later than the earlier ones which have obviously grown fairly slowly up until now as they've been in the blow away. I'm already thinking that next year I should keep the first sowing indoors for longer to bring them on more quickly

    • I find that if I pot them on a different times it seems to hold some of the lettuce plants back.

        • Sowed Matilda (liked the name) yesterday and put out overnight as GH warming up now. Previous lot (Roxy) will be potted on and by end of May will be tucked in around peas and cabbage, ie where there is room and enough light.

          • My lettuce buckets have been stood outside for around a month covered with debris netting to hopefully keep the pigeons off.

            • Matilda sown on 19th only produced 2 seedlings, probably due to warm overnight temps. It’s a bit cooler today (26 instead of 30) so will sow Frisée de Beauregard this evening after the pot comes out of the fridgeLooks like the person who is looking after the garden and plot while I’m away will have a nice few lettuce to eat as quite a few seem to be coming ready in the next couple of weeks.

I have never grown rocket, I don't like peppery leaves, however my mum has told me to grow some, because apparently the seed pods are absolutely delicious! (She had them in a post restaurant.) So I am growing it for the first time this year purely for the seed pods. You might want to give some a try Bren, though blame my mum not me if they're rubbish!
Nestled somewhere in the Cambridgeshire Fens. Good soil, strong winds and 4 Giant Puffballs!

                  • Every time I've tried to grow rocket it's bolted on me. This year I'm trying wild rocket instead - hopefully less prone to bolting & added bonus of being semi-perennial so if it takes I shouldn't have to sow any more for a few years at least. Only time will tell if the theory actually works in practice though.

                    • I’m sure I have some wild rocket seeds Andraste will have a look tomorrow.

Peanut I do like seed pods I only grow radishes for the pods so I’ll leave a couple of rocket to give those a try.
