  • Cold overnight temperatures

The forecast for the next few nights is overnight temperatures may drop as low as 3 to 6 degrees. Planted out I have Safari dwarf french beans and Sungold and Sweet Million tomatoes. The tomatoes are surrounded by a 3 foot high agricultural windbreak material that that cuts out 50% of the wind.

I am assuming, perhaps wrongly, that these unusual low temperature will not be good for them. Should I take action to protect my plants from these low temperatures and what can I do?

If you have any horticultural fleece then it might be worth covering them with that for the next few nights.
As long as there are no frosts the plants will survive, but they won't like the low temperatures and will likely end up stalling and not growing for a week or more until they recover.

Thanks for the advice. I found some net curtains I could use. I covered last night and then uncovered today. I will do the same tonight.

Another cold one forecast for me tonight, could get down to 2 or 3c! Not what I want at the end of May!

Just been out and covered up. A bag of mixed size net curtains on freecycle is proving very useful. Not the right size for my windows but great for the garden. Two are 88" by 200". One is long enough for my tomato bed. Ever so glad I didn't put them back on freecycle when I found they didn't fit my windows

Yes! Nets can be so useful for covering things up! I've just been out and covered mine in a mix of fleece and bubble wrap!
