  • Planting sweetcorn and NZ Yam (oca) together

    Has anyone ever done this?

i'm thinking that as long as the sweetcorn gets tall enough to be ahead of the yam, then it should work well.

the sweetcorn will be done and dusted before it's time to lift the nzy.
I'm already converted to growing them under the bean frame as ground cover as well as a crop.

Sweetcorn needs a firm ground to stop the plants tilting over in the wind, would the growing yams cause soil disturbance around the sweetcorn? I’ve only ever planted melon & squash amongst sweetcorn.

I think root competition would be an issue for the oca.
Oca likes moist soil and partial shade, I have found. They really suffer if things are too hot and dry, or too sunny. The sweetcorn would provide the partial shade they need, but sweetcorn also put out quite a lot of roots, which I think would take too much water from the oca.
