  • Picked my first broad beans today.
    The Sutton and Buynards Exhibition.
I sowed these in pots last autumn in pots.
Kept them in the cold greenhouse over the winter.

And when your back stops aching,
And your hands begin to harden.
You will find yourself a partner,
In the glory of the garden.

    • I also harvested my first broad beans, along with 3 globe artichokes and a bag of elderflower (first batch of cordial made!)

            • I have picked 4 broad beans and 4 pea pods (the peas are the first that are ready). The broad beans are a bit of an experiment as I am not yet sure how to judge when they are ready but as we prefer them double podded if at all large, I thought maybe we might manage the younger ones whole.

Mixed lettuce basil and radishes for lunch.
Lastly mint and chives for a yoghurt dip.

Always exciting! Have lots of flowers and a few fruits forming but got a while to wait yet.

I was surprised by how early they ripened this year, too. I actually had my first single fruit about 5 days ago; this was just the first time I had enough for a proper portion (for one person, admittedly).
They're just outside in the ground at my allotment, not in a greenhouse or anything. Although my allotment is quite a sun trap.
