Ha - I can beat that one, about a month or so ago I was doing my banking and as I got to the counter and the gil was counting my notes out, a large, fat, green caterpillar fell onto the counter - must have been sitting on my baseball cap allthe way from the field to the bank. She wasn't exactly pleased to see it either !Originally posted by lynda66 View Posti found a cabbage white caterpillar climbing up my bathroom door before ...... no idea where that came from??Rat

I woke up one morning, duvet tucked up to chin. Not quite conscious yet, the eyes were bleary and focussing on green ... green? My duvet's white.
As my eyes opened, I realised it was a fat green caterpillar curled up next to my chin. Must have come in on the washing. All gardeners know better than other gardeners." -- Chinese Proverb.

will build a little mesh net similar to what I put over my leeks to stop the pigeons from pulling them out!!! (Canes into 2 litre coke bottles and canes linking them together...)
I know I am blonde but can't visualise the canes and coke bottle thing. Sounds like a cheaper option than buying mesh cages so if anyone has the patience to explain please.

Buy some four foot long canes. Put one in each corner of the bed with about 1 foot sunk into the ground. Add extra canes about every four foot or so on long runs. Empty plastic bottles can then be placed upside down over each cane (naturally take off screw cap first.)Originally posted by sallym View Postwill build a little mesh net similar to what I put over my leeks to stop the pigeons from pulling them out!!! You then have a basic framework to drape a net over (the bottles stop you poking your eye out and stop the net sliding down the cane)
I suppose if you want to be a bit more elaborate you could cut small holes in sides and add other cross bracing canes but I never bother.
Tennis balls can also be used to good effect also with holes pierced in them accordingly, for the canes!

Thats how i do my cages aswell - except i buy 8 foot canes and saw them in half....
Anyway = definitely pigeons......attacking the leaves on my swedes now.....
I took the home made cage off my leeks and put it over the sprouts....the leeks have survived so far!!!
Perhaps time to make another frame......
