I'm hopeful that I'll get that paper potter for xmas, then I can recycle some old newspapers too!

Sounds like it's worth a try with the loo rolls, I'll just try not to let them get too wet!

Thanks for the tips on newspaper pots, they look great, will have a go with both methods, the jam jar way looks easier, but I want to try the origami ones too!!

The jam jar ones are easier IMHO, even though I still get my OH to make them for me, as she is much better at that sort of thing than me.
You can make them as tall as you want, which is good for things that like a good root run. I read somewhere (might have been here) about someone who made paper pots 12" long for her parsnips, which sounds a good idea to me.

You'd be amazed at how weather proof they are too. I left one out in all weathers, expecting it to drop to bits, just to test it out, but it stayed in one piece for months

Thats it settled then, no paper potter for me, I'm going to make them using a jar! Much cheaper and fun too by the sounds of it!

Sad person that I am, I lay awake for a while last night trying to remember which glass/jar I used to make my paper pots last year (I was going to reply to your post last night, but I was too tired - then I stay awake thinking about it anyway!)

I really enjoyed making paper pots last year, very therapeutic, plus costs nothing - always a bonus esp for a Yorkshire woman

I used loo roll tubes for leeks and parsnips in spring this year and they worked really well. I've recently used them for germinating broad beans as well (you get really long roots if you plant the seed in the top 1/4 of the tube). Planning on doing sweet peas in them next - and anything else I can think of!

Remember to keep all the cardboard inner tubes from chrsitmas wrapping paper. They can be cut to size! I already have one stashed after reading this thread.

LOL i know what you mean, i saved up loads, then promptly threw them out when somone said they go mouldy should have read the thread all the way through, had to start saving up again.

They only go mouldy if you over-water them.

I microwave mine (all at once, Emily) for a minute before planting them up (to kill any fungi)... they've been fine.

I think everyone should experiment with loo rolls and newspaper pots, it's free so it can't hurt to try it! I'm just going to be careful with my watering so they don't get too mouldy!!
