Gnarly asparagus

This year was supposed to be that exciting moment when I can fully harvest my asparagus, but something has gone wrong. Very few spears have come up and those that have are all gnarled up and crooked. Has anyone else experienced this? Any ideas on how to fix it?

Reading this it sounds like it might be frost damage?
