  • Tomatillo plants: how many?

I'm growing tomatilloes this year, and have 6 strong plants ready to plant out. I am aware that this is too many, but how many plants do you think I do need? How well do they crop, assuming they are outside in the south of England and we get an average summer? There are three of us, and I can't imagine we'll want tons and tons of them, but I would like a decent crop.

I have never grown them or indeed even eaten one, what do they taste like, can you freeze any excess?

I did 3 a few years ago. 1 cropped poorly for some reason, but the other 2 had loads so I'd say 3 is a good number. I left them like a bush tomato and they took a fair bit of room! I think 2 plants would be plenty, so I'd plant 3 (I think you need 2 for pollination).

Okay, three it is. I'll give the other three to someone else.

I grow tomatillo last year. I had 3 plants, all needed some help with pollination. Don’t think I harvested them until late September when the sacks turned brown. They freeze well!
