Best Marigold to plant with Veg

I followed my dad's advice which was - sow them in trays, and let them get BIG before you put them out. The slugs love them. Next year I will need to sow much earlier than this year cos the didn't grow as fast as my plants, and weren't there to save them! Oops...Originally posted by SlugLobber View PostIt could be any kind of marigold, it won't grow in my garden. The slimy ones nibble them as they come through, I think. I haven't had ONE germinate.
Any ideas on how I can improve my yield next year? I have tried two packs of seed, one of which was after the 'Slug-wars', involving metaldehyde!!Warning: I have a dangerous tendency to act like I know what I'm talking about.

I've got Tagetes Patula Nana (Bolero) setting seed now. It seems the slugs pollinated them! Send me a SAE and I'll set you up with more seed than you need. I put them around my cabbages. I have also read lots of stuff on the internet about this subject. I think (if my memory serves me) that beans don't like the French ones and that the English (pot marigold) is good with Tomatoes.
I'll also second the previous poster who said to sow them in trays. The trays do okay outside on the ground even as the slugs seem to avoid them. I'd leave them until they have their first flower bud.Last edited by marigold007; 21-08-2008, 08:31 PM.
