  • Potato Barrel - Help!

    Help!

I have a potato barrel in my greenhouse ... but I have just left the plants to grow and now my greenhouse is being taken over by the potatoes ... should I trim them back? I have tried to tie them back - but the leaves are just too heavy. Any tips? Should I just leave them?

I have also not had any flowers on the plants yet - is this normal for this time of year? I was expecting flowers from late June onwards? Are things just a bit slow this year? (My tomatoes are still green...)

Any advice would be gratefully received!

Hi Victoria Plumb, welcome to the forum. Whereabouts in the world are you? It's unusual to grow spuds in a greenhouse. Depending when you planted and what type of seed used potatoes take on average 20 weeks to grow. If you've got that much foliage, have a dig into the compost and see what you find there. As for tomatoes, I live in North wales,UK and my toms in the GH are only just starting to ripen now.
I you'st to have a handle on the world .. but it BROKE!!

      Hi Terrier,

I'm in South London ... with a very small garden and I thought that it would be a good idea to put my barrel in the corner of the greenhouse (this is my first year with a garden of my own!) ... thanks for the advice - I'll have a dig around and see what I've got growing - I'll be so disappointed if there are no spuds after all this! Next year I'll move the barrel out of the greenhouse!
