potatoe growing seeds

As I was digging around my potatoes I found growing on some of the stems was a small tomatoe like seed pod,actually at first glance I did think how on earth have I got tomatoes growing in with my spuds but then after a closer look relalised they weren't and that these small tomatoe looking things were actually growing on the stem of the potatoe plants,they're about 1inch across and just look like a small green very hard tomatoe. does anyone know whot these things are and are they any use!! whot should I do!!!! thanks cath.

I read another post about this the other day. Apparently they are seeds and some people are going to try and grow potatoes from them. If you do a search you might be able to find the thread.

Cath, whatever you do, DON'T EAT THEM! They are poisonous!! Although they may be some use to grow potato plants from, really it's probably best to dispose of them with the potato tops.

Once they are big enough about �", remove them an leave them on the kitchen windowsill until they dry up and turn black, thenbreak them open and you will find loads of little seeds, these are 'true seeds' that you can plant in buckets to try to get potatoes from. No-one is sure how many potatoes you will get from them or even if they will grow (many people have had them grow though) and so most of us are just experimenting with them. I think if you have a look in 'New Shoots' you might find a thread regarding this.

I have distributed Salad Blue Seed Fruits to those who've expressed an interest this year as I had so many. Next year 'we' hope to develop an experiment where several varieties will be started from seed - some from mine - some from others who have different seeds saved. We'll be trialling different start dates and also making notes of our locations and ambient growing conditions to guage which produces the best amount.

It is possible to buy TPS (true potato seed) - but the only one I've spotted is in the US.

I love to try new thing but I feel the potato seed's experiment is a step to far for me, especially as I am always short of space at that time of the year. I do however keep my own tubers for seed.

My potatoes (Cara) have developed these "seed" things and I am wondering if they are doing any harm to my potatoes if I leave them on. Should I be harvesting my spuds now ? Bit hard as I am on holiday mles away for another week.
