Slugs & supermarket tatties

When I was setting my tatties I ran out of sets so put 3 supermarket eaters in to finish off the row.
Today I took 2 roots up 1 was the early (Swift) and the other was one from the supermarket eaters just call British whites, growing next to each other.
On peeling them I found that the Swift were half eaten away by slugs as they all have been, yet the supermarket root had 6 good potatos at it and not a mark on them,
Any ideas the reason why ?

I think the slugs know quality :-)

I'm not sure if Swift are particularly susceptible to slug attack. I expect it was more down to a lucky break and you getting to the supermarkt spuds in time. It is disappointing though. Might be worth check any adjacent plants to the Swift quite soon?

I emptied a row of spuds from flower buckets recently and the last in the row showed a lot of potential attention from slugs and snails - nasty trails which had gone white. Just one spud with minor damage. Simply got there at the right moment - down to pure luck.

Some potato varieties are more susceptible to slug attack than others. I would imagine that commercial growers would choose a variety less susceptible, so as to have some fit for sale When you order your seed potatoes, the description will usually say if they are slug resistant, but they won't bother to tell you if slugs are partial to them - not a good sales pitch
