How are your carrots?

Hi

My carrots have been very poor. If they have survived the slugs, they're been very small and the ones big enough to eat have been pale and flavourless. I presume it's due to the lack of sun? How are your carrots?

doing really well, my best year ever. sorry!
this is my secret ... my soil is stony, so I grow them in pots of multi-purpose, sunk in the ground (to stop them drying out).
Cover with fleece/voile against root fly.
no need to water carrots.
not much sun here either.
I've not bothered with slug prevention ... they curiously don't seem to be a problem (now I've done it)

Last year was the first time I grew carrots and I grew them in a pot with multi-purpose compost and they did really well. This year they're in garden soil with a little garden compost, added last Autumn. I used the pots for potatoes instead.

Hi Tracey.....I've been quite lucky with carrots too. First lot sewn in March.....on the whole these have been good, not massive but a decent size & flavour, only lost one or two to slugs These are in my raised bed (very deep with good top soil). I have a second lot sewn around May in a container filled with multipurpose(yet to see what these are like... tops OK) and I've just sewn more two weeks ago in my second raised bed. A good depth to the soil seems to help, but providing you follow the basic rules (environmesh, deep,free draining soil etc.) I think the rest is down to luck.....certainly so in my case as I don't really know much about it or maybe the type of carrot

Not sure how much of it is down to sun as some carrots can be grown in the Autumn.....maybe it is just the type. Good idea about sinking the container Two Sheds

Hi,

I eat my first ever home grown carrot yesterday, about 5 inches long, it was lovely, washed, topped and tailed then in my gob!

My are being grown in a 1mtr square raised bed filled with multi purpose compost.

Ours(touch wood!)are doing really well this year too,except I got a yellow variety to try (sorry can't remember the name)~really bland!,but my good old orange ones are good!We've also recently planted some red ones~interesting to see how they taste.

Mine dint grow either. :-(

2 packets failed to germinate, 3rd packet sown when bit warmer and the slugs had the few seedlings that made the effort.

I did manage to get some up in a big container, but i discovered yesterday Carrot Fly has moved in, so the majority of those with go into the wormery.


Was thinking of starting a group in our new updated bit call C.a.C. Crap at Carrots, but there appears to be some negative vibes around regarding the updates.

My carrots have been fairly hit & miss again this year Had a flower bucket with Chantenay in, they did ok, but a bit slow. But the huge trough which I sowed loads of different varieties in, has been an absolute disaster - First sowing, soil capped & hardly any came through, then the ones that did were munched by slugs. Second sowing, came up really well, kept the slugs off, covered with Enviromesh, then OH sprayed glysophate on some docks nearby and it caught my carrots (Don't worry, he walked clutching his groin for some days afterwards, he won't make that mistake again ) So they all had to be pulled up.
I'm onto my Third attempt now, and if these don't work that's it! we'll stick to flower buckets.

Just picked my first proper ones(thinnings in salad were nice)look good,usually have fly problem but these look fine.Chantenay were my choice as I tend to grow the shorter variety in my raised beds.
