Getting seeds from a Tomato plant

I just did that - about half an hour ago!.

I have just found this thread by accident, glad I did now.

Do I understand it that you just take the bottom shoot off the tomato stem and stick it in some water to root and do you cut it off or just pull it off so that it has a heel?

I never knew that about the sideshoots - I used to pull them off and just throw them in the compost.

It's the shoots that you would normally 'pinch out' and throw away.

Oh I see I thought you meant the stems with the first true leaves on them!

They are �2.99 for 6 seeds (half price at the minute).

I always save tomato seed from what tastes nice from the various toms I buy. This year its small yellow and red piccolo tomatoes. I just cust the tom in half a scrape the seed onto kitchen paper(discard the pulp flesh) give them a wee wash in warm water to remove any icky stuff and allow to dry- plant them as you would normally. I also have had great success with the long red sweet peppers. The germinate and grow very quickly and this year I had so many I was giving the plants away at every opportunity.
Did the same with the seed from the halloween pumpkin and butternut squashes and they are already out in the allotment albeit under a cloche - go on try everything thats the fun in gardening.
