peanuts!!

Anybody tried growing peanuts? I bought a plant at the garden centre, thought i'd give it a go.

i was thinking about this the other day, we have a squirrel who seemed to think for the last few years, that it was a good idea to bury all its peanuts in my garden, i kept hoping they might grow, but when i was digging, none of them had germinated so i just left them in the ground, but i'm not holding my breath lol

Bumping this thread as when I popped into our local nursery [Castle Donnington - plug - they're fab] they had a few Okra and peanuts; so I bought one of each.

Going off to do some research now...but if anyone has any ideas feel free to post them.

I picked up a couple of peanut growing packs in Focus last November. I tried around 6 seeds in the terrcotta pots and eco peat provided. 1 germinated - the instructions advised to keep it moist and await the first shoots, and when the plant is established transplant into a larger container and fertilize weekly. (A little bit vague).

The plant is still growing on a windowsill but there's no sign of peanuts. To be fair, it did flower but it hasn't been outside (the wind/something else might get it! -it's pretty leggy with it being sown early and delicate and needs quite a bit of support). It likes direct sunshine.

I'm no expert but I think peanuts develope underground a little bit like potatoes. So you wont see any till you dig them up at the end of the season. Mind you I could be totally wrong.

I know that they grow underground...

It says on the label to put them into pots, but you get more harvest if the roots can spread...but if they are in pots then surely they won't spread out???

I've found that they come out green and need to be dried...now to try and find out preferable soil type...

I'm sure I read somewhere that after flowering the stem bends down and the nut behind the flower penetrates the soil and grows undeground. so I think if you support the flower stem above ground then you won't get any peanuts

All sounds a bit complicated, think I will leave it to the people the other side of the pond and purchase mine from the supermarket.

Nope. Good luck with your venture. [I did put it outside 3 summers ago and we had another crap summer that year - nowhere enough heat].
