mushroom growing

I bought a kit, followed all instructions and have just got my 2nd crop of 2 mushrooms. I had 2 on my first crop too! Imagine, We have 4 mushroom lovers in our house, and half a mushroom each just doesn't go far enough!

I used a mushroom kit in Feb. We got about 8 mushrooms in one crop, then nothing. The mushrooms were lovely though. A few weeks ago I plugged some oyster mushrooms spore dowels into a log DIY Oyster Mushroom Log Growing Kit featuring the Phoenix Oyster Mushroom.

The last time I went to Slovakia I saw oyster mushrooms growing out of bags of straw for sale in a supermarket. they sell the dowels fairly cheap there as well. We just happen to be going to Bratislava for a long weekend break next week, (just me and OH, no kids ) so will probably buy some dowels and try them in straw rather than logs, at a couple of quid a pack it is worth a try.

ps. I still have four logs on th eplot that will just sit there in the folorn hope that they may produce a single oyster mushroom this year! we live in hope.

I think the kits are great - my first HUGE one - attached I hope (well, big to me) and lots more are cropping up - treat them mean (I kept on forgetting about them....and hoorah). Fingers crossed for more crops !! MJJ

Drilled logs on straw just keep damp.......the boxes are okay but leave them at home, as on the plot they can attract ants.

Fungi have to have just the right conditions to grow or else they don't bother fruiting. Pro mushroom growers have it down to a fine art, us amats probably won't do as well, but it's fun to try. When I tried a mushroom kit, I got one shroom about one pound in weight and about three tiny ones and that was about all I've got some shroom spores from Wilcos. You mix fresh Equipoo with straw and let it heat through for a while, then when it cools down you mix in the spores and top it off with compost. To be honest, I'll be amazed if anything grows, but I'll have a go anyway. Alternatively, get some good mushroom books and go out into the deep dark forest and enjoy yourselves

I put some dowels in 2yrs ago, nothing!!! but I'm reluctant to throw away my logs....just incase.....
