my potato harvest this year was a real experiment. this is my first year of growing stuff and until finding this site everything has been done by trial and error. like this time i found the potatoes i`d thrown on the compost heap (supermarket value brand) had grown into sizable plants. dug one up recently to find a handfull of nice new tates ready for the pan 
have planted some desirae from the kitchen early august in a prepared area again to see what happens .....
as a foot note the compost heap taties were just thrown on the heap and then covered with grass cuttings a week later, the august ones buried 4" deep, not heaped and not bothered covering shoots as i dont understand what thats supposed to do
