i would love to know where the local councils recycling department is, cos it would save me having to get top soil or compost to fill my raised beds, i have 6 to fill and it would be a real cost to buy

A relative of mine worked at Homebase, and he would say that you avoid it like poo on a stick. The amount of returns and complaints throughout the company was on the gardening and gardening equipment sector. Cheap badly made stuff at low price sold for high price. As was said before Homebase is one of the more dearer diy stores.

Has anyone tried their local councils recycling department. The one based near ipswich has bags of sterilized compost for �1.50 and only �1 if you dig it yourself. i am in the process of trying to get a bulk load from them, which i am sure would work out much cheaper than anywhere. Those in the Suffolk area my contact me once i have more info on amount and price.

I rang my local council about this last week, got passed onto the County Council, the onto YorWaste who deals with the compostable material for them. They kindly told me that if I lived in York I could have a tipper truck full for �40-�50. As I live in Craven District I can't have any, because they're using it all to landscape the mess left behind by Tarmac quarrying, then them using said quarry as landfill Not a happy bunny!

croydon council has "croypost" free of charge
take stuff to the local "recycling centre" (the dump) and take away 3 bags of croypost (we have to fill the bags ourselves)
croypost is a bit rough - some large woody bits in it like bark chippings but it's very popular and i've got about 10 sacks of it here
i've used it a bit like bark chippings / mulch - will be digging some in properly this year

do you think that will be ok to lay croypost in bottom of my raised beds so i wont need to get as much compost or topsoil ???
