Onions planted in ridges

A couple of weeks ago I planted my onions in ridges of about 4" high to aid drainage, although I don't think drainage is going to be a problem, but as it's my first year with the plot I copied my neighbour.

Space is a premium as it's a half plot and I have 20 or so left, can I plant these on the flat between the ridges?

Of course you can this is normal way to plant Onions the reason for planting in ridges is to hide them from birds to stop them pulling them up they think it is a piece of straw for nest building they will grow alright on the flat jacob

Glad I'm not the only one who copies the plot next door without knowing why!

Just bear in mind, Sue that the closer together that you sow your onion sets, the smaller the resulting onions will be.

The only thing I use ridges for is spuds and leeks. Onions I always grow on the flat. Ridge up spuds to stop them going green, and plant leeks in the furrows between ridges to increase the length of white stem.

I will be growing almost all my veg on wide ridges (mechanically produced). In fact, the only veg that will not be on ridges next year are courgettes and whatever is in my tunnel. I find it is easier to get between crops for weeding and aids drainage.
