Any Asparagus Experts ??

Hello Folks

Help needed please.

I grew a few asparagus seeds and am now at the stage where I feel they need to be repotted.

Photo1 shows them in the mini prop and photo2 a potted on asparagus.

Questions as follows :-

1. Obviously the repotted asparagus is still sprawling all over the place, is this just how they are for the first year or have I grossly underestimated the depth of the pot?

2. When will I be able to put these outside, I will probably leave them in pots this year, if that's wise?

I wish had a better memory. I am pretty sure my asparagus plants looked very similar to that a few years ago. I remember I put tiny canes in and tied mine up when they got really messy. I kept mine indoors until they looked as if they could stand up to the big wide world (bigger than that).
Until yesterday my plants, about 7 years old now, appeared dead but yesterday I spotted a chunky little head poking it's head up. The spears have got bigger and fatter every year.

I think mine were pretty thin & floppy too when babies, although they were outside so maybe not quite as leggy. I didn't put them in the ground until the year after sowing, after potting on into wide but shallow pots.
You may not want to read this, but they were so pathetically spindly and thin I harvested nothing for four years , and nearly dug them out a couple of times
We're now into the fifth year of harvesting and although the voles have eaten about half of the 14 plants I planted out I've just started picking this year, mostly fat spears, twice a week, and more than enough to feed two as a very generous vegetable.
The variety is connovers colossal.

I can’t advise as you’re doing much better than mine. They haven’t even germinated yet.

Thanks for the responses folks, for now I will pot them up and pop them outside, nothing ventured

I assume I could plant in troughs/planters 4 or 5 at a time?

I put mine in 3inch pots and then eventually directly into their final planting place.

as with most things it's best not to stick young plants into pots that swamp them. If they've been in 2" move them into 3" and keep moving them upward. Straggly plants are easier to manage if staked.

Broadway they look fine to me, but wont like a hard frost. If can pot up and keep by a sunny window they will respond. Have some in conservatory which have got 2ft tall, tied up on thin canes. Keen to put them in final planting place but hard frost risk still too high

Quick update

Well they seem to be getting on okay, I'm thinking of moving them to the blow-away greenhouse now, am I taking a risk?

I’m no expert, but they look pretty much lke the ones that I grew from seed last year. I Put them in the ground last summer. So far, 4/15 have reappeared. Only time will tell how many survived the winter!

Broadway, RIP I hope not, but no telling these days. I have just planted mine out as the roots were getting too big for the pots. They don't look happy due to the night time temperature change but think will be fine and will fleece if any frost forecast
