Chickpeas

Hello everyone!

I found myself looking at the seeds in the local garden centre today and noticed chickpea seeds which I�ve never thought of growing before, anyway I got a packet and thought I�d give them a go.

Has anyone here ever grown them with success or are they a waste of time?
Any hints/tips would also be greatly appreciated.

I'm trying them this year, from a supermarket pack. I reckon they'll need heat, so I'm putting some in the polytunnel (once I've got the plastic on, that is lol). I'll put some outside too, to compare

I grew them in a greenhouse. I got a grand total of three peas I suspect the issue is I didn't hand pollinate them, and didn't have any pollinating insects in the greenhouse.

I’ve grown them before. It’s fun to do but only if you have lots of space and don’t mind an experiment. you will never really get dried chickpeas here unless you are on the south coast and we have a really good summer. The green chickpeas are nice though. You get one per pod and yields are low (my bees don’t seem to have cottoned on to them yet so not every pod gets a seed). It might be that if you save seed they will acclimatise to your conditions.

I didn’t use heat to germinate but did to it inside. Soaked them and left in damp kitchen roll till they sprouted then potted up until big enough to brave the allotment.
