    Another vote for onions. Alliums in general really as whole plant is edible at all stages of growth, they feature in many dishes and you can usually substitute a leek for an onion.

      Tromboncino has to be added to the list. You can use it as a pasta replacement. How cool is that!

      I’m going to do it, I’m going to add chillies to the list ( what a surprise). You can use them in sauce, chutneys, pickles, jams, powder, cooked with or raw, lot of different cooking style Chinese, Indian, Thai, Mexican, Mull . You can use them in chocolate, cakes, puddings, drinks. You can even dry them and just use them as decorations. Because of the massive choice in varieties you can have all of the above with no heat, blow your bl@@dy head off and everything in between.
      Tell me that’s not versatile

          I think the magic 3 that grow easily are Spuds, tomatos and onions. The brassica family and carrots get an honerable mention ;-)
