Sweet corn swift coming to an end

Initially thought they were rubbish. But I was too impatient.
Once they filled out they were great.
Just about finished but still a few left, so will leave them for now.

The garden and green house are currently being tidied up ready for winter.

Trying a few salad greens in GH.

Is everyone else shuting down for winter?

No closer down here I like to grow all year round if I can.
Yesterday I planted my winter lettuce in the GH border then sown more in modules for later. I do need to weed the Brassica bed but it's to wet today instead I've Sown micro green for a bedroom window sill.

I'm a closer downer up here, not so much the cold, but the severe lack of daylight.

My squash are over and my sweet potatoes will be gone soon, but I still have a lot of winter crops in the ground, and certain autumn crops, like oca, won't be ready until early December.

This time next year I don't intend to be closing down the plot for winter as I hope to still be growing a few winter crops under cover as well as have leeks, brussell sprouts etc in the ground.

THIS YEAR however .....it's been a complete and utter write off as losing the job I loved led to a return of my Black Dog and I just completely lost ALL motivation for everything (not just the allotment) and I've grown nothing but weeds Started to feel better and more optimistic in early October so planned to really get stick in to the plot and completely clear it of weeds before winter set in properly....only to come down with a horrendous lurgy (thanks husband!) that laid me low for two weeks. Today was the first time I've actually been to the allotment in 3 weeks so I've enjoyed getting stuck in to pulling up a whole load of nettles and brambles

Decided to strip the allotment right back to a naked plot and start afresh from January 2020 and I feel REALLY excited about it for the first time in ages

I pride myself on keeping a plot fully planted throughout spring,summer,autumn and winter.
It takes a bit of planning but is achievable.
The previous onion beds are now full of brassicas including spring cabbages, purple cabbage and savoy cabbages. The tattie beds are now planted with leeks and onions. The carrots,beetroot and leeks are ready and will be used as required throughout the winter.
The sprouts and PSB will be used as they mature. The swedes are progressing well and I have already started eating some. The strawberries are even producing again. Next to come out will be the Swift sweetcorn to be replaced by garlic.
The pea and bean wigwams have just been taken down and curly kale plants will be planted in their place.

The whole plot will then be fully planted for the winter.

Ours is an all year round plot too. So much great food to be had, not enough meal times..

The plot is mostly closing down for production, apart form some questionable leeks which still have to go in, onions sets which I failed to plant in spring, and broadbeans to sow in modules and plant out. Also a potatoe harvest to complete. I've lagged behind a lot this year and the plot needs some serious work. So that is the plan to get things in order before spring

My plot doesn't get shut down, but things do slow right down

Some of my beds are covered, some have chard, leeks, cabbage, kale and swedes in. I've ordered garlic which hasn't yet arrived and also have some onion sets to go in - when it stops raining! A couple of beds have Phacelia green manure in, and another is left uncovered for bean trenches to be filled over winter. So I do some jobs and harvesting throughout winter, especially in any mild spells - luckily the colder weather slows the weeds right down - that helps a lot

I desperately need someone to help with the planning part. I'm great in the spring with getting this sowed, and I plant out great and then I forget all about when to sow what for winter and I need someone to prod me. Will you be my knight in shining reminding armour?

And Gilly, I know exactly how it felt for me when I was in that situation and it really knocks you for six. Don't dwell on it for too long, and try to accept the circumstances that you can't change or affect, to help you move on. I really feel for you. Big hugs

I try to keep most of mine planted up too. Nearly all my Summer veg are out now but I 've got varying brassicas in for Winter and Spring as well as swede, parsnip leeks and carrots. I've just planted over wintering onions and garlic. As soon as the local garden centre gets potato sets in in Early January I'll get some first earlies and chit them and plant them in two of the greenhouse borders for an early crop next year. They'll be out in time for tomatoes and peppers to be planted out. Winter lettuce will also be planted in the greenhouse.
Early next year I'll also be planting maincrop onions and shallots. When I can see things growing (whatever the season) it gives me the impetus to carry on.

My Penultimate plot thread is basically my diary of work and gives sowing and planting dates. I try and have brassicas ready at all times for planting up areas as other crops are removed.
It all depends on what you like growing and eating though. Its a continuous learning process for me. This year I leaned to stick with Kestrel spuds as they have a bit of slug resistance that some others don't. Mine is a wet plot so keel slugs are a problem.
