  • Squirls and sweet corn

Dropped the wife off in town with the car.
On returning home there was a squirl sculking on the drive.
My sweet corn bed is next to the drive.
I wonder if it was eyeing up the cobs?

Anyone had trouble with squirls and sweet corn?

    Thanks Jimmy

Not only squirrels but rats as well like it. They can leave it looking like peeled bananas.

Re squirls and typo, sorry it was 60 years or so ago I learned this stupid language. Even then it confused me with its ridiculous inconsistancies.

I've heard that cutting the top off of 500ml plastic drinks bottles and slipping them over each cob is a good way of keeping rats and squirrels (or tree rats, as I prefer to think of them) off your sweetcorn. I've never tried it myself, though.

I read that growing corn together with squash can discourage rodents as they don't like the coarse leaves. I tried it and it seemed to have worked successfully until a few days ago when a squirrel had a good chomp on the last 2 cobs. The squash foliage has wilted and died a little in the cold/wet so maybe it did work up until then. I will try the same again next year anyway as it seemed to help and if nothing else you can get 2 crops out of the same bed.

Fingers crossed no damage yet. Two nice cobs last night.
