You should be able to snap them off cleanly by bending them down (or up) against the main stem. Works best when the plant has been watered - not when its limp!
think I am going to take the tops off all mine this weekend, weather is not looking to great for august, might be tricky getting anything to ripen, then again hopefully we will get a nice September
