Would you use this waterbutt??

Hello all, hope you and your plants are all enjoying the decent weather (finally)!

I�m currently using tap water for the greenhouse in which everything is edible (toms, chillis and peppers).

Everything is growing and fruiting surprisingly well considering the start to the summer we�ve had but I really would like to make use of this water if it�s safe to do so on edible crops?? I�m thinking probably not, it does seem a bit dirty to be feeding the plants with this water if I�m gonna be eating the produce raised on it!

It�s full of larvae, I�ve put a good glug of olive oil in this afternoon as I read that it should starve the larvae of oxygen. It�s not an ideal set up for rainwater harvesting but it�s not something I will tackle now until I get the new greenhouse.

I'd use the water in there no problem for plants .

The stuff you have to be wary of is when its a relatively new barrel and there may be a question of some chemical residue still being in it imo.

THE only problem I can see is the algae etc will block a rose on a watering can.

Thanks for the replies. It’s certainly not new, we only bought the house last year so not sure how long it’s been here but a while I’m guessing from how brittle the plastic is!
I use it on the flowers so it has been emptied several times since we moved in.

It’s obviously now full again with the rain we’ve had and with my toms and peppers getting massive and hungry I’d like to start giving them some water without all the chemicals.

As for the rose, the greenhouse is getting very jungle like so no rose attached! All lower leaves/branches are cut off on the toms to avoid splashes but I’ve been quite ruthless with watering today, they all looked very thirsty. The other reason for asking about the water butt is the distance to it from the greenhouse, it’s a hell of a lot closer than the outside tap!!

Thanks again for the replies, I don’t think it will last long if the hot weather continues but will defo start to use it over the weekend when I’m next watering the greenhouse.

Thanks for your replies, I’m happy to crack on with it then! The olive oil trick worked, no signs of any larvae in there at all this evening!

Pure buzzing with this weather, the crop is absolutely loving it, everything is caked in flowers and fruit but nothing ready yet. With the weather forecast over the weekend I reckon we may just have the first 3 pardons ready for Sunday afternoon. One each with a home made tortilla patata and a decent glass of Rioja haha!!
