Thanks for that - I'm going to stick with my first guess of "damping off" as the most likely cause - I wouldn't rule out other possibles like slug damage, but I think it won't be the cold, as if that was the problem the other plants in the same pot would either be suffering or dead too.Originally posted by Jane0o0 View PostManaged to get a pic on. Quite a few have shrivelled like that one in other
pots.

Its a soil born disease that seedlings are prone to, particually if the compost is a bit wet - the classic symptom is when the top looks OK, but then all of a sudden the plant keels over and when you look at it carefully it seems to have shrivel at ground level. (easy enough to spot when you have the seed pot in your hand)Originally posted by Jane0o0 View PostWhat is damping off? I'm new to all this. Couldn't be slug damage as these have been in the sitting room.
Generally only a problem for a week or two, as when the plants get bigger they get some immunity to it.

Basically simply meas that they get plenty of light which they need to grow healthy and strong, but don't get too cold, which they particularly dislike.Originally posted by Jane0o0 View PostThink I'll put them in greenhouse during the day then and bring them back in at night. What does it do exactly?
Keep an eye on the roots too - ideally you move them on in to larger pots before they fill their current ones too tightly.

Jane, as a rule of thumb. If the roots are growing out through the bottom of the pot they need to be moved to a bigger one.
I usually knock the plant out of the pot gently and have a look at the root system. You should be able to judge from that.
You're doing well so keep going.it will soon be warm enough to put everything outdoors.
And when your back stops aching,
And your hands begin to harden.
You will find yourself a partner,
In the glory of the garden.
