greenhouse facing - expert advice needed

have 3 6x4 verve plastic greenhouses. want to join them together. I decided to set them at north west corner of my plot. (first bed at the corner edge) since they are 3 separate frames and plastic am trying to put them most usable way when it comes to joining and facing.


am thinking of joining them sides so the doors can face east or west. or combination.

If I join to it's front and back, the doors face north and south.


Please put me in right direction.

Do you mean join them lengthways as I did - so you end up with a 6 x 12 GH or 3 side by side like a terrace of GHs?

The ridge should face east to west or as close as you can.

My understanding was that the sides being east-west allows more even growing. And a southerly facing door is out of the prevailing wind. However my (verve) door faces north because of how my plot is aligned and that hasn't been a problem so far. I have a chair weighted down with a brick to keep it propped open when the weather's lovely and warm.

Won't putting them in a line be the most sensible way of using the space? You can grow more that way with the longer space and it'll maintain a more consistent temperature than the smaller ones. Joining at the sides would mean you'd have to come out of one to go to the next, so they'd essentially just be 3 side-by-side g/hs. If I'm understanding that right.

Thank you sparrow, put all 3 of them inline, I too prefer northerly facing door as well since that end has water source nearby.

This is 4 feet wide bed at the moment so thought of joining side by side with out having to distrub current paths. but this way it would have to be zigzag beds so that I wouldn't have to come out to go to the next.

I have few roof joist wood (45x75mm) I think. would they be useful under base? do not have bigger ones than that.

I'm still confused so I'll tell you what I'd do!
Put one in the middle without doors and join the back of another one to each end of it to make a long GH with a door at each end.

VC, my question is about facing . if you see the fallowing pic...I have 3 of these can be joined either by 4ft sides or 6ft sides as you have mentioned. hope I made it clear.

I would make 1 greenhouse 6'x12'. Put 1 greenhouse on each end with a door but no back & put 1 greenhouse in the middle with no door & no back so that you could walk the full length.

I think they're too small to be much use, unless you mean centimetres. Mine are about 45cm by 20cm so I get about a foot extra height.

Don't forget to put it on a very slight incline, join the gutters and position water butts at one end. You should get a hell of a lot of free water from a greenhouse that long.

I'm using 225mm wide scaffold boards on mine as a base to give he extra head room inside and assist in holding the kite down to the ground.

If you want to grow crops all year round, it�s best to line up the ridge of the structure to run east-west, as this will maximise light during the winter. It will also help it to heat up more quickly after cold nights. If you intend to grow summer crops only, then aligning the ridge north-south is preferable as it gives an equal amount of sun to each side and helps to reduce overheating on the hottest days.

Not particularily relevant............but I joined an 8 X 8 onto an existing home made jobbie at right angles to the original. (Just to see if i could) The new plot holder on this plot can do what he wants with it when i leave in March. It meant i could utilise the gable end of the 8 X 6 for growing a peach tree, with a single entrance from the end of existing greenhouse.



That greenhouse, along with this post could be classed as tangential!

This was really helpful snadge, I was thinking various ways of using extra door. but I have wooden coldframe uncovered and needs the wooden door replacement.

I have 3 double glazed panes of size you used on your homemade frame., which unknowingly I split(may be due its heavy weight). one got broken into milloin pices and I have 3 left. may be previous tenant wanted to use to glaze the coldframe.

now I do not know how i can use them safely. will post some piccies tomorrow .
