I knew from reading around that butternut squash seem to do better in a greenhouse but I really don't have room, so I just planted mine out where and when I could, including two in an old wheelbarrow. I had a brainwave this weekend though and dug out an old pushchair rain sheild. Amazingly, it was pretty much exactly the right size and shape to cover the barrow
I shall be very interested now to see how these squash do v. the ones that are unprotected!

. All my plants are stressed because they are waterlogged, in the ground and in the pots - and here in Torbay we did not get any flooding, just an awful lot of rain which seems to go on and on. We did get a sunny day yesterday though. The rain returned overnight and didn't let up till 10 am. Oh well - at least the water butts are full and I haven't had to top up the pond.
