DIY Green House

Hi was wandering which polythene material is best for use for a DIY green house instead of glass. or would pvc roof sheeting be better. any help wold be apreciated as usuall

I used industrial catering cling film around a frame to protect my runner beans as a short term measure. I assume the same principle will work for the greenhouse - not sure how long it will last though!

Glass is more efficient at holding in heat and has greater light penetration.

If you're trying to get a greenhouse on the cheap the best bet is second hand. Try freecycle if you're very lucky or failing that local free ads and ebay. You'll be suprised how cheap you can pick stuff up - my 6x6 greenhouse cost �25 for example.

You could try any of the polytunnel companies, and buy a tunnel size cover. Or you could try Norfolk Greenhouses http://www.norfolk-greenhouses.co.uk/ their Standard greenhouses are covered in polythene sheeting, which is supplied on a roll - you cover the greenhouse with lengths, overlapped, from one side to the other, leaving long tails on each side to bury and thus hold the structure down. I am fairly certain they sell this sheeting seperately (and the tape to seal it), and their prices are fairly reasonable. We have 2 of their Standard greenhouses, no complaints so far.

Guess what have been offered a free greenhouse 8ft x 6ft automatic vent and sliding door this was from Freecycle. Cheers for all the advice otherwise would of spent a few hundred quids. Am very excited after the large rain down poor whilst trying to put my shed up today

Congrats on your greenhouse. I have an 8 x 6 and I am really enjoying all the stuff I can grow - 4 tomato plants 4 chili plants, one sweet pepper and four F1 Fidelio cucumber plants are currently in residence!

Hi as I am still excited about my tiny greenhouse. This is obviously going onto my allotment so was wandering what type of base should i put this on, I have access to a lot of pallets or should i use slabs
ps: as i am new to this is my greenhouse to small

I have an 8x6 greenhouse: 13 tomato plants plus 6 peppers. I grow on average 70 trays of flowers/year in it.

I have no room in my garden for the flowers from a bigger greenhouse (lots of room for a 20x10 greenhouse tho!)

they are having you on waynebeddall it is plenty big enough ......for now...they only mean that you will get so excited at the prospect of what you can grow you might over do the sowing seed bit....
