Potting shed/Greenhouse

Don't whether there is a thread about this already or not, so sorry if there is.

Am interested in getting a potting shed/greenhouse was wondering if anybody knows of any decent ones that are affordable? Where's the best place to look? I don't mind a second hand one but would imagine a new shed would be a lot easier to assemble.

Looked on a couple of sites but more money than I can spend . So wondered if anybody knew of any suppliers who make relatively sturdy wood and glass ones that are reasonable.

Thanks. No it isn't but wasn't sure whether it was any good or not. As I know absolutely nothing about greenhouses especially wooden ones and that manufacturer. Is that greenhouse any good or has anybody got one?

Wooden ones will rot, and need annual maintenance. They look beautiful, but are expensive, you need hardwood. Pine and softwoods are no good at all, don't even be tempted by them.


What are you looking to grow in one? Tenders, exotics all year round, or just a place to start your seeds off in spring? I do all my potting and sowing in my gh, the shed is strictly for storage

I would recommend you read a couple of books before you lay out cash. I like this one by Titchy (you can order it through your library)

Thank you for your help and the links . I am not sure what I want really as was just wanting somewhere to grow my seedings and then a greenhouse type area to grow peppers and tomatoes in. Don't really need a shed as yet as I don't have a lot of tools it was more for growing in really. Bascially my family are sick of me growing seedlings in the conservatory, my garage and shed are too cold and damp even with a heater on.

^ Start off with a blowaway, and see how you get on with that. A decent gh is a big wad of cash

Have a look on Freecycle for a free greenhouse. You may need to replace some glass but it would be a lot cheaper than the ones you're looking at.

Two sheds - I already have a grow house kind of like that and do use it, its just when they get into bigger plants but still are too small to plant, I need somewhere else to put them to let them fully grow. Did buy a poly full size greenhouse 7ft but it got broken from kids next door kicking a football, so don't want to waste money on another if it breaks so easy. That's why was looking for something more permanent. So will read the guide and hints that you mentioned, thank you.

I have had an old shed with the roof removed and clear corrigared plastic roof panels put on, also some of the wooden side walls panels cut out and replaced with some perspect sheets rescured from a skip. The shed was free and in total i spents less that 30 quid on it.
It dont look pretty but is ideal as a cool greenhouse for summer use, yet ok to storing things like canes in the winter.
Have a look on your local freecycle site and see what you can come up with.

I'd do it on the cheap if it's for the allotment. I got a shed for free on a local site, and is contemplating a lean to greenhouse to go on the side. However much I'd love to, I can't justify spending a grand on a nice potting shed

TB thats an awful lot of money for what you get.

I have the Walton Gardman 8` x 6` polycarbonate green house at this time of year I have a portable bench in there for potting etc. �279.95p

Have a look see what you think.

Was in B&Q today and saw a walk in poly tunnel (think it was 8 and a half by 6 and a half) for �99 (dont know if that's any good or help!) which i considered myself. Bought a second hand greenhouse off a friend, decided to use polycarb (football mad 10yo + glass :s ) but a family member 'can get it cheap' but wont get on with it, but wont let me do it myself....... maddenning. Empty greenhouse frame. Want to visciously maul it with a sledgehammer and start over!

SarrisUK - Yeah, I was a bit wary of even the basic price for that potting shed/greenhouse in the link. It seems all greenhouse regardless of material they are made from are pretty dear especially from the greenhouse companies online especially wooden and glass or metal and glass ones. More for my garden than an allotment (would like one in future but waiting list is pretty long locally.) So definitely agree with you wouldn't buy a decent shed for an allotment.

Potstubsdustbins - Thanks for suggestion, I hadn't thought of a greenhouse like that.

Guess I will have a go at modifying an old shed like what arpoet said and hope I get something in end like what Snadger achieved, fingers crossed.

Kierlynraya - Yeah, seen those poly tunnels but think I want something more structured/sturdy. Hope you get the greenhouse you want sorted soon
