To String or to Cane...that is the question !

Oy sarky, I didn't say I was using 6ft canes did I ?
I only use 3ft peasticks at home to support the young seedlings until they go in their permanent pots

Whoops I think I have just had my legs slapped. If they are that high I use plastic vending cups stuck on the end of the cane with a blob of blue tack.

No cane will ever cross the treshold of my poly, too risky as piercing the skin is allways on the cards.
I string with polyprofillen twine under the root ball tied to strong garden wires running from end to end hooked to the frame. Like Alison found, don't use any old twine but a non rotting one.

With my folks greenhouse, I got some thick gauge wire and ran 2 lengths at knee and then waist height along the length and as I went along I woved in the canes so they are suspended securely.

My first year in the greenhouse as well and my intention is to run a wire across the eves, secure my canes to that and then sink them into my grow pots which will be sunk into my grow bags.

Hopefully they will bear fruit (Pun intended)

First year tied string to shorter canes - the weight of the plants pulled the canes out of the ground
First year and last year used garden twine - oops, plants broke the twine, plants on floor of greenhouse - swapped to double lengths of proper string
Last year used the twine/string into the soil - some broke (plants on floor again)
Both times tied string to canes laid horizontal in the inbuilt hooky things near the top of the GH - plants went past this, and one made its way out of the autovent (and yes, i did try stopping them!). Plants broke the end of canes, but luckily only sagged rather than on floor of greenhouse

Is there a theme here? (too big plants, too many!)

This year - probably the cane horizontal (but maybe two together); really solid string from day one; probably canes as well but not sure about this
