My enviromesh arrived yesterday. It says in the instructions that I can cover the veg and peg down loosely and the veg will continue to grow. What do you think? Can I do this, or would I be better erecting a framework?
up to you. They will grow, I've done the same in the past, but the trouble was, the netting wasn't fine enough to stop the butterflies landing and laying eggs through the tiny holes. If enviromesh is smaller than that, don't bother with the framework.
Thanks taff. The mesh is really, really fine, even supposed to prevent white fly. I might throw some over the caulis tonight and watch the progress. I'll have to erect some kind of frame over the sprouts though I suppose.
We've got some Wondermesh. On their site there are pictures of it covering fields, I can't imagine a farmer doing something that will harm their crops. (There's a picture here)
I prefer to have mine under frames for my brassicas but do just lay it over the carrots to prevent the carrot fly. Not too sure why but it seems to work well and is probably due to concerns with cabbage white butterflies laying eggs through the mesh, however fine it is.
Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.
Yep, all my brassicas (apart from some of the raddish) are under frames covered in enviromesh. Expensive originally but is fab stuff and lasts for years.

i'd put up a frame if you can
if the flying rats get a sniff of the leaves and they grow real close to the cover they could try pecking through and tearing the e-mesh
I think enviromesh is better stretched over a frame. Fleece is usually the stuff that is draped over the plants!
