  • Greenhouse help

My Dad died recently aged 100 yrs. He left me a small inheritance. Dad loved gardening and plants. Although he lived in a 2nd floor flat he had a couple of tubs that he planted up every year with geraniums. To honour him I'd like to buy a greenhouse. It needs to be 10ft long by 8ft wide. My budget is £1500 max. I need the greenhouse to include vents, base and double door.
Do any of you wise ones have recommendations?

Sorry to learn about the loss of your dad. As well as a financial inheritance I'm sure you also inherited a lifetime of gardening knowledge that you'll put to good use in your greenhouse.

I have no knowledge of greenhouses unfortunately, I've always gone for polytunnels from an economy standpoint. My current polytunnel is about the size of the greenhouse you are looking to buy and supplies me and Mrs Vince with plenty, plus a small surplus.

I reckon you'll be looking at upwards of £1,000 so £1,500 should get you something pretty smart. Good luck.
    Are y'oroight booy?

Unfortunately a polytunnel wouldn't work. Where we live we can get a fair bit of wind but thanks for your thought

Sorry to hear about your loss, Ger-annie-um. I'm in a similar position. I've inherited some money from my mum and dad. My dad was a keen gardener as well and though my mum was not, she enjoyed the results of his labours.

I'm in a very windy location but was thinking not so much about a greenhouse but a very long cloche, so lower-lying and not as exposed to the wind. I'd use it for seedlings and overwintering salad leaves. I grow toms and the like outdoors, though, so perhaps a cloche wouldn't suit you if you were hoping to grow taller plants in it. Just an idea, though.

My condolences too Ger-annie-um. What a lovely way to honour & remember your Dad.

Hopefully someone who's recently bought a greenhouse will be able to pass on a recommendation for brand/supplier to meet your needs & price range

Your budget sounds reasonable to me

I have had an 8 x 12 Rhino for almost 10 years, best thing I have ever bought for the garden, an 8 x 10 is over your budget, but you get what you pay for. Mine has withstood storms and grandkids footballs(toughened glass).

I'm looking to use it for growing cucumbers and tomatoes in the summer and as a frost free house for my citrus in winter. Thank you though for your thoughts......I really want this to be a lasting gift from my Dad

I've already got a Rhino and I agree, best investment I made 20yrs ago. I should have got a bigger one, hence getting another greenhouse now! Unfortunately my inheritance doesn't stretch to another Rhino.

I've got two little Greenhouse People greenhouses. One with bar capping (bought in a sale) and one without (bought with my 40y award from work). I don't really see any benefit to it functionally. Obviously, the ventilation options are desirable. The toughened glass is a tossup depending on whether you plan to break the glass!
Location:- Rugby, Warwckshire on Limy clay (within sight of the Cement factory)

4 energetic grandchildren make toughened glass a must! I'm thinking of adding extra roof vents and louvre vents. The bar capping appears to make construction a little easier.........hubby in 80's me not far enough behind for my liking 😏

The plastic bar capping certainly takes less finger strength to fit than the metal clips!

I bought an Elite High Eave 6x8ft with toughened glass and green bar capping, plus some shelving and an auto vent, 3 years ago. It was from GardenSite, but I rang around the big sellers to haggle the price as the greenhouse is delivered direct from the manufacturer.

They don't seem to do an 8x10ft but we really like the High Eave height.

Have you considered trying somewhere like ebay and picking up a second hand greenhouse frame and extending the one you have, of course it may not have the glass but you could always purchase polycarbonate sheeting a bit cheaper
it may be a struggle to reach the top, but once your over the hill your problems start.

Thanks for all the suggestions folks. Yes, I considered 2nd hand greenhouse but most need dismantling by purchaser and travelling is not an option.
On marking out the site for said greenhouse I've discovered 8 x 8 is my max (unless I demolish a raised bed hubby built, wouldn't make me popular! )
I'll look at Elite though, thanks SBP for the tip
