Greenhouse base

Hi all,

I am looking to buy a greenhouse , 6x4' as space is limited, and was hoping someone could tell me what sort of base I would need for siting it on grass or paving, (not sure where it's final resting place will be yet!)

On paving you should be Ok to screw the frame straight on it, but for grass I'd lay a firm rubble base and then lay a greenhouse base on top of that, then the frame.

We dug a sort of groove and put down breeze blocks then bolted the greenhouse frame to those.

OH laid slabs under ours. At first it seemed a bit backwards, laying slabs over a perfectly good garden to grow things in. But it's worked really well. Everything is level and easy to clean. We have raised beds down both sides. The slabs also act as a heat sink holding the heat in overnight. The greenhouses are also raised and bolted onto ash blocks which gives us more head room, helpful since OH is 6' 2"!

it does need to be bolted down, don't be tempted to skip that bit.

Mother's isn't, and it moves 3 ft in a high wind.

Whatever you do - bolt it to something - ours blew away as my smarta**e stubborn husband said it was too heavy to blow away yak yak yak. He has never lived that one down. Also - check your contents/building insurance covers it just in case.

I would definitely agree with bolting it down. I was given a second hand greenhouse earlier this year but when we went to pick it up it was already dismantled. When me and my OH finally got the thing up (having no previous greenhouse experience 8 hours and lots of cursing later) he bolted the frame to the slabs. Unfortunately as we were both stressed and at breaking point naively we left it there without putting in the glass. A lovely wind night followed and a heap of crumpled aluminum greeted us the following morning - won't make that mistake again!
