  • Boring borage

Hello all, i have had success growing borage ( duchy organic i'll have you know) !
Any way its growing well, but its quite prickly - i thought the leaves were edible as well as the flowers not that there are any flowers yet!

The leaves are about 7 - 10 inches and the plants are standing approx. 6 ins high.

    Am i being impatient?

I think so, Bargainhunter - Borage gets to flowering when it is 18" - 2 foot high.
I've never eaten the leaves because they are pretty prickly but the flowers are nice.
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

I put some Borage in my greenhouse with my tomato's as a companion plant and they're about 5 foot tall but acting as great shading for the tomato's and the flowers are stunning and attracting a lot of beneficial insects. However I haven't a clue how they taste although they do seem to produce a lot of nectar.

The flowers are gorgeous in a salad though they are purely decorative, the leaves taste a bit like cucumber. Rub them a bit to take off the prickliness. My favourite use for them though, is to freeze a flower in each section of an ice cube tray and use them in my summer G&T!

I've tasted my first borage leaf the other day, and couldn't believe how cucumbery it was! Have only got a couple of little plants at the moment, but am hoping they come on quickly now the weather has heated up a bit! Am loving the ice cube idea Flummery!

I thought that was why people grew it...

I mean, I was environmentally responsible and planted it to attract bees!

they do much better in open ground than in a pot though and will self seed mercilessly.

I put an ice cube with borage flower in my son's coke. He wanted to know why there was a fly in his drink! and when I explained it was a flower, he still wasn't sure why it was there. I think I'll save them for my elderflower cordial, and enjoy them myself. LOL!
