I just put my herbs into garden centre compost and it's growing OK- i'm guessing most compost has added fertilizer anyway?!

OH forgot to add- i did add some extra fertilizer to the compost when i sowed my broccoli and turnips so i suppose it wouldn't hurt to add some for the lettuces!

I used Miracle Gro, i'd be happy using that for lettuces.

600 miles north of you, my rocket is in fishboxes, pots and also in a mix of salad leaves and is growing well. It's in Lidl's cheap compost and in a relatively shady place in the garden.
You can start to pick the leaves when the plants are about 3" high. This will keep them small - they grow to about 30" at maturity. You could leave some to go to seed so that you have next year's crop free!
I don't find that it needs feeding, and I'd rather not put chemicals on stuff that I'm going to eat anyway, but each to her own.
