  • Do Chives Self-Seed?

    Hi Everyone.

I have grown Chives for many years and always divide when one gets too big.

I keeping reading that Chives self-seed. I have never seen them do so in my garden.

Does anyone on here have Chives that self-seed?

I'm just interested to know if they do

    Thanks
    R

Mine don't self seed, I wish they would. I wonder why some do and some don't?

I have the common purple flowering Chives.

What type are you growing that self-seed?

Mine never self-seed. The clump just slowly expands through bulb division.

I have garlic chives, purple flowered growing for years.
              They have never self seeded.

I have purple flowered chives and white flowered garlic chives. The chives self seed, the garlic chives don't.

I have got some that self seed in cracks in paving but seed heads dropped into the herb bed at the allotment do not grow.

Mine do if I leave the seedheads on. They seem to do best in the gravel pathway

Do people find they over-winter outdoors? I find I have to do new ones every year and they're terrible to germinate. On my second attempt now and finally I think they're showing up. I often have to swallow my pride and buy them from the garden centre!

I have several plants outdoors dotted around exposed to different growing conditions, and they all die right back then come again year after year, bigger and better.

Mine were originally supermarket bought ones and divided.

Mine have always been oudoors, my biggest clump has been in the ground almost 20yrs. I also have a pot full. Both lots come back each year.

                            Same with m8ne.
They have been growing outdoors now for several years.
They die back each year and then come back in the spring.

Have my fingers crossed when i say this my Chives stay out all year. As others have said they die back in winter and come back in spring/early summer.
