  • Basil Cuttings.

Lots of us have problems growing Basil I read this tip years ago here on the vine but can't remember who originally posted it.

As easy way with Basil is to cut the top 3 or 4 inches from healthy plants popping them in water then pot on once they have good roots.

Absolutely! Here’s a reply you can use for the forum thread:

Great tip! I've found that propagating basil from cutting the top part is a fantastic way to not only multiply your plants but also ensure you have fresh basil on hand throughout the season. Just a few reminders for those trying this:
    1. Choose Healthy Plants: Make sure to select healthy, disease-free basil plants for your cuttings. The more vigorous the original plant, the better the cuttings will root.
    2. Water Quality: Use clean, room-temperature water to encourage healthy root growth. Change the water every few days to keep it fresh.
    3. Potting Up: Once you see a good amount of roots (about 2-3 inches), pot them up in a well-draining soil mix. Basil loves warmth and light, so place them in a sunny spot!
    4. Pinching Back: After they establish in the soil, don't forget to pinch back the tops to encourage bushier growth!

    Happy gardening

I picked basil last Sunday, and the sprigs I didn't use I put in an eggcup of water to use another day. Didn't get round to cooking anything that needed basil all week till I decided on pasta last night. Picked the basil out of the eggcup and to my surprise it had grown roots, though thinking about it, basil is related to mint so I should have expected it really. Needless to say, I potted it up instead of cooking it so now I have two pots of basil.

MH it doesn’t take long for them to root does it.
I’m hoping to keep some basil alive on a windowsill this winter.

I hope I can do the same, Bren, never tried it before.

This year's experience with mine shows that it can have truly impressive roots and likes a lot of soil. I suppose it's not too surprising given the amount of root it can make after a week in a jam jar of water. . If it's warm enough and has some light, it can use a surprising amount of water. The cutting that I took earlier this year is getting through almost as much as the tomato plants.
