I often buy supermarket herbs and plant them out, but only in spring/summer.

I have about 20 clumps of chives from two supermarket plants two years ago and three oregano plants in pots (one from each of the last 3 years) still going strong. The greek basil only lasts a year, as expected, though.

I think it must be the time of year you do it. I wouldn't buy them in february.

I must have about 20 clumps of shop bought chives around the garden...some more sucsessful than others, but more successful for me than sowing seeds in situ!
And yes...I adore butter rolled freshly dug potatoes tumbled with chopped chives!

You've just gotta try at least don't you?
      Win some/lose some eh

^Apparently the trick with chives is to leave a clump unpicked for a year. Then they really get going. I tried it once and it worked for me. Had gorgeous chives that everyone admired, till we got chickens and they ruined the lot.
