House plants

I bought three different Epiphytes cuttings last year to go with the ones I have from when my Dad used to grow them in the 60's/70's, the first one has flowered. 8 inches across, these are so impressive to see in the conservatory, though this one seems to have no scent.

Flowers are appearing again, this one will be open later this evening, the scent is amazing, my old ones smell strongly of coconut, but this one seems to smell like really nice talcum powder!!

Now fully open, the scent last night was amazing(for those that don't know they are pollinated in the wild by Bats and Moths at night), it will only last for around 24 hours sadly, but we have another bud.


The variety is Grenatum

Are they difficult to deal with?

I bought mine from ebay, you get a leaf/stem and just pot it, they are tender so need to be inside and it takes a couple of years to get flowers. The plants are not what you'd describe as nice to look at and the can take over your house if you let them, some have cacti like spikes on them, but not all. I pot mine on every couple of years, water in summer, but don't bother feeding them. They need support and are best in a heavy clay pot as they will fall over, in the wild they climb up trees.

I should have four different varieties hopefully this year, the flowers only last for around 24 hours and the plants themselves are, well rather ugly. My Dad grew these in the 1960's, I still have plants from his original one.
