Bamboo type orchid

We have got a couple of different orchids in our house one of which is a bamboo type orchid. It had a tall thick stem when we bought it with small white flowers which lasted ages. They have now died off but a new stem has started growing. Question is do I cut down the original big stem and allow the new on to grow on? A couple of pictures to show you what I mean.




It looks like this has already been done before?

I'm not too good with indoor plants so someone more helpful may be along soon.
My Mum is a lover of orchids and says that you have to cut them off - but at the right time, or the new shoot won't grow.

I have one just like it . (Dendrobium) I find it so much easier than usual orchids and twice mine has flowered twice in the same year. As you only have the one stem I would be tempted to leave it. However, after a very long time (years) it will shrivel and die. It only flowers on new stems

Been having a look on the internet and the pdf above and still none the wiser. I guess it depends on the actaul dendrobium i have as to whether i chop off the old one. As i have another stem growing along side it as in the picture i might chop off the old one or leave it?? Who knows

Dendrobium Nobile but that still doesn't help when having a gurgle Mine has three cut stems (1 was done when I bought it in the clearance section in B+Q 3 years ago, because it wasn't in flower. Yay for gardeners ) 2 are old flowered stems, 1 has not flowered, then there is one new stem coming.



And yes it needs a shower

Well the one full stem i have has already flowered. The new stem growing hopefully will flower when it grows fully. If i cut the flowered stem now the pot will look a bit bare!! But might incourage the new one to grow better??

Wow! Your bamboo orchid is awsome! I think it will be okay if you cut them out. Just be careful not to expose your new plant to too much direct sunlight. When it finished blooming you can cut the spikes down. Have a great day!
