Orchids and facing window

Hi all

I currently have mine on a south east window and they do so well. We are waiting to move but the house is on a different direction, so worried about them..

What facing windows do you have yours on?

Mines on an East facing window & has been beautiful this year.

I have seven on north facing windows, and they do very well. I have one in the south facing kitchen window, but it really doesn't like the fierce summer sunlight it gets. I generally move it to a counter top for July/August.

Mine are on an east facing window and do fine . I found the west facing kitchen window too hot for them

Mine do really well on my south west windowsill...and North East window ( above a radiator in winter)
Previous house they grew best North west over a radiator.

Looks to me that they just need decent light!...and warmth?

(Mine have clear glass plant pots so the roots get light)

Mine is also east facing, it flowers for around 9 months then dies back, I run water through the roots on a sunday.....had it for nearly 4 years now and its still very healthy despite being mostly ignored

I've read so many times about their roots needing light but mine is set into a log..............

Orchids seem to be the one house plant I don't seem to be able to kill off!
I leave them to wilt and then over water them...but yes, my house is usually pretty warm....maybe that is the secret??

Does anyone know where to get the bark they are in from? I used the orchid compost from b&q but it's to wet and two of them have really bad roots and want to repot them

No idea...but I did find this to give you an idea of choice and cost....looks like it's fir bark...

Orchids are the only plant the OH can grow successfully! Partly because they thrive on neglect and partly because she always has the living room so damn hot!
They are on an East facing window sill above a radiator.

I have re potted them before with normal potting compost and they seem to do OK as she has had them for many a year!

Some of mine need potting on....I must have about 10 of them and there are always at least 6 in flower at the same time.
I'm a bit wary about how to pot them on as they hang over the side of the pot...any suggestions Snadge?

If the roots seem to prefer to be outside the pot, it's probably a phalaenopsis orchid you have, Nicos. That's what most of mine are too.
This is quite a good video on repotting.
