Wisteria or roses?

Hi, I will have a beautiful new patio door through what is at present a window measuring12 feet by 10 approx. I want to grow something around the outside, preferably scented. I had a beautiful wisteria at my last house, but it had only really just started to flower when we had to move, can I get a mature Wisteria so I not have to wait 5years before it flowers, or can I get a repeat flowering rose to put round the door that will be manageable.

A house a few doors down from mine has wisteria and it looks stunning.

Gosh I didn't know a broome would grow that tall. Would it be bit difficult to train it round the arch of the door?

Wisteria are rampant and take ages to flower.... I would go for a rose, they will have interest for several months in the summer. Wisteria are over quite quickly., my OH gave me a wisteria for Christmad several years ago...I'm still waiting for it to flower and pruning it is a pain!

I must admit I was leaning towards roses as they are my all time favourite flowers. I just thought that I would have to put in a rambler, to get the height and from what I have read they only flower once, albeit quite profusely. What I thought I could do was plant a rambler and a climber, but the pruning is different for each, and how would I know which branch was which
It's a good job there are so many knowledgable people out there when there's someone like me about

Don't buy just one plant, go for a mix of different ones that will flower at different times, giving you a lot more interest through the year

Clematis viticella are fab for growing in & around roses, lovely big bright flowers

Not all climbing roses are ramblers, and not all are rampant. But you will need to prune to keep in shape. Go for colour and perfume. It is hard to kill a rose by pruning - unless you cut out all the grafted rose and just leave the rootstock.

I, like Two Sheds, like to pair roses with clematis.

ETA - and apart from the pain of waiting for wisteria to flower for several years, and having to prune them in the correct manner - they have a short flowering season as Scarlet mentions, and they create a load of fallen petals which get blown indoors so easily.

Very good point about the petals! Can any one suggest a rose please, when ever I start looking at roses I just want them all

I was going to suggest Roses and Clematis, too. One of each, on each side, as well. Yes there will be leaves and petals and creepy-crawlies, but the flowers and the scents will make up for the mess and inconvenience.

What colour do you want, Bal? Start from there.

Again if it was left up to me it would be red, d I love red roses, I prefer the ones that open in a spiral(they are my favourite flower, but I know so little about them). As it is a large space I would also prefer ones that have largish blooms, and they must be scented, they will be in the scented garden. Is there a scented clematis?
