My sunflower....

Hi All , My sunflower has bloomed under the heat of the summer finally, Thank you to you guys for the help. It turns out a quite weird sunflower after all.
It is also developing some small flower buds along the stem. Is it normal for this kind of sunflower to have more than one flower? I thought it was one flower for one plant....

My 4 sunflowers are multi headed ones it just depends on the variety.

can I plunge those small flower buds to give the main flower more energy to have bigger bloom?, well, not on this plant, I mean on my future grow.

Hey, well done.

As to removing the side blooms, I don't think it will make any difference to the size of the main flower head.

I'd leave it to do its own thing - it will look fantastic with several flower heads

Not really.
If you want one big flower, you need to plant a sunflower that's been bred to do that: something like Russian Giant

However, it would need to be in the ground, with very strong root system, to support a large head like that.

Thanks veggiechicken, I glad you enjoy the sunflower... TBH, I was little bit disappointed when I first saw it because of its weird shape... but the more I see it, the more I like it


Indeed, Russian Giant is too big for my backyard, I think am going to stick the current one next year.

Now let's see how those little side flowers turnout.

I lost my sunflowers in the wind we had a few weeks ago, so well done to all who have them growing nicely.

We actually have sunflowers growing as weeds!

No actual flowers as yet, but we had hundreds growing all over the garden and I decided to put em into a tub. Thankfully, they appear to be dwarfs

I think they came from a bird feeder which a crow trashed several months back.

I grow sunflowers either ends of my pea and bean rows but slugs ate the top of one of them

out in the cold, it must have taken ages for you to put those sunflowers into a tub, no wonder TS did say that sunflower is kind of weeds.

Sure, I will update with pictures again when the smaller ones bloom, hopefully, the big flower is still there blooming nicely. (am I asking too much...? )

Here are our school sunflowers, from 2011:

2012 was too cold & wet, we didn't get any at all.

This year they are only now bursting into flower, a bit late due to the cold spring.

They are all grown from birdseed
