I moved into new house end of october which had a well kept garden. Anyway there is a patch of land in middle which had 2-3 foot woody sticks (showing one in last pic) having noticed new growth at ground level a month ago I chopped the dead stuff away and this has started growing through. Wondering if anyone can shed some light on what I can look forward to.

Looks like Yellow Loosestrife (Lysimachia Vulgaris).Lysimachia vulgaris - Yellow Loosestrife (Primulaceae)
I have lots in my garden - its spreads like mint! Excellent no trouble ground cover, beautiful bright yellow flowers. You may have too much of a good thing though

Thanks for the spreading heads up, how would I control it? just treat it like a weed around the edges?

Just dig up what you don't want.

It likes damp marshy ground. Which might indicate that your little plot (is it supposed to be a lawn?) needs some drainage. Alternatively, keep the loosestrife where it is, and grow other things somewhere else.

Well it is kinda walled off (see pic 3&4) at one side (opposite side from pic 1) as the garden slopes down from the nearest side of pic 1 to the back (where the small wall is ) so I dunno if that was put there on purpose, to trap water or I dunno, the rest of the lawn, despite being a tad over grown is fine, not marshy at all

My garden's not marshy either - apart from the normal level of Welsh rain. I planted the loosestrife deliberately, as I love the flowers. I also have one with variegated leaves and a purple leaved one.
If you need to reduce the area, just dig them out and try not to do what I do - replant them somewhere else

I'm happy with this wee area at the moment, was only if they do spread like people are suggesting then what to do with it.

We have two black labs, so maybe they will keep them at bay themselves haha
