  • question about planting out magnolias

    Hello all,

I've just bought a bare root magnolia sunrise - it is a couple of feet long, and with a few buds on the end. I am about to plant it out, but seem to have come across some conflicting advice on soil type.

I thought Magnolias were acid-loving, and I was going to plant out in ericaceous, but have seen some suggestions for normal, humus rich soil with plenty of well rotted manure.

    Would welcome your suggestions.

As you say, conflicting advice as the above sites demonstrate.

Hmmm, maybe I'll do half and half.

most plants do quite well if in neutral to slightly acid soil. I'd add a bit of ericaceous compost to the planting hole and then keep everything crossed.
