    mesembryanthemums - love 'em! But whats the best way to grow them from seed??? Ours always end up floppy & top heavy and most die....

    Hello Smallblue planet, I don't know the answer to your question but they are only half hardy, won't tolerate cold weather and need lots of sun. My sister calls them Miserable Anthems. Maybe she's had your problems.

        Thats the nature of them I'm afraid. If you go to Cornwall & Sciliy they are almost Indemic on the cliffs but in nature they sprawl a bit. If you think that they (& there cousins) grow in South Africa, you'll get an Idea how they should grow. In this country they get a lot of water & that makes them fleshy. Ideally they need a free draining compost & should be kep on the dry side - the opposite of normal bedding.
