You could weave a willow screen? Not all bamboos are invasive! Or you could have a fence!!

I was advised to plant a Lawson's cypress hedge instead of leylandii in a garden I had many years ago.
          You could try privet?

She already has a wall about 5' high but wants something to give privacy from the neighbours (not us I might add ) Some guy came round and said her soil was acidic and the only thing that would grow is leylandii ....Am guessing she wants something thats fairly quick growing ......I've told her she's mad to plant leylandii (I hate it )

Jeanie that Lawsons Cypress looks as if it might fit the bill as long as they keep it clipped .......

Leylandii is vile. Juniper? Blue spruce? Or trellis up the wall and clematis Montana, which will scramble up it in no time.

A 5' wall and they want something higher? Any conifer or hedge is going to take up so much width and, if its backed onto a wall won't really thrive. I'd do what VVG suggests ^^^^^ Trellis and climbers.

My preference would be for a climber or for something productive tbh ......can't see the point in having a nice brick wall and planting a hedge in front but as the saying goes .........there's nowt so queer etc.....

Don't let them plant leylandi. Tis the plant of the Devil and the scourge of mankind.

Not only that but there's a back garden about 10 or 12 doors away that has leylandi running the full length of what could be a lovely 80ft garden. It must be 60ft high and shades at least 4 gardens either side.

                          Who would buy those houses?

I've warned her that if my plants start growing horizontal I'll be knocking her door. Only just got them vertical after they removed some trees that were there before .........
